About RoHS 1.0

The RoHS2 Directive, 2011/65/EU, prohibits the use of lead and other potentially harmful compounds such as cadmium, mercury, chromium VI, PBBs, and PBDEs in electrical and electronic equipment. RoHS restricts these compounds to 0.1% or 1,000 ppm (with the exception of cadmium, which is restricted to 0.01% or 100 ppm) by weight of homogeneous material. Directive 2015/863, issued on June 4, 2015, revised Directive 2011/65/EU to include four more phthalates, bringing the total number of prohibited compounds to ten. Products in categories 1–7, as well as 10 and 11, must be compliant by July 22, 2019. Products in categories 8 and 9 must conform by July 22, 2021.

The EU RoHS directive is closely connected to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) 2002/96/EC, which establishes collection, recycling, and recovery objectives for electrical products. Similar rules exist in various parts of the world, including China, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Norway, and Turkey. About RoHS 2.0

RoHS 2 (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is a European Union directive (2011/65/EU and 2015/863) that restricts certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) to reduce environmental and health risks. It applies to manufacturers, importers, and distributors of items like household appliances, medical devices, and toys, requiring compliance before using the CE mark. RoHS 2 expands on the original RoHS 1 by adding new substance restrictions, broadening device categories, and requiring declarations of conformity. Batteries and packaging materials are excluded, as they are regulated separately. Temporary exemptions are granted for items like military equipment and solar panels until safer alternatives are developed.

To demonstrate RoHS compliance, organizations must complete testing, create declarations of conformity, and apply CE marks to their products. Compliance can be self-declared through a Declaration of Conformance (DoC) or verified via third-party testing to confirm levels of restricted substances. The directive is closely tied to the WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive, which promotes recycling and recovery of electronic waste. The latest amendment, RoHS 3 (Directive 2015/863), adds “Category 11” items and expands restrictions to ten hazardous substances, reinforcing the commitment to safer and environmentally friendly electronic products.
